The older you get, the quicker your summer flies by

I guess they are right when they say as you get older the summer seems to go by faster and faster. I am not for sure where August went or even July for that matter but anyway, summer started out great. Thank you to Nebraska Wesleyan and the many opportunities it offers I attended the Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute (UIFI), a leadership conference in Bloomington Indiana. It concerned Greek life and focused on how we as young people can make an impact in our own communities. I gained new insights about Greek life and what I can do to make a difference on Wesleyan campus. I am excited to set up an all Greek philanthropy in October!

After the conference reality sat in as I began to work at Olsson Associates, an engineering and consulting firm where I work in the human resources department as well as on campus as the co–coordinator for New Student Orientation. Although I feel the majority of my summer was spent working I was able to squeeze in numerous trips to Kansas City to visit my sister, a couple Salt Dogs games, and a few outings to the cabin for an enjoyable time tubing and relaxing in good company.

Now as the middle of August draws near I begin to prepare myself for an intense but exciting upcoming senior year. I still have trouble grasping the idea those four years have quickly come and gone and I reassure you it will be a reoccurring theme in my upcoming journal entries. It feels like yesterday my beloved sister, Wesleyan alum herself, was setting up my loft in what felt like 3x5 room as I registered for classes for the first time. The saying rings true, time flies when you are having fun.

If it is one piece of advice I can offer early on as a new academic school year begins it is to get involved. You get out of Wesleyan what you put into it. I cannot encourage you enough to push yourself to try new things and do the impossible. Live with no regrets. Good luck and have a very successful first month on campus!

Best wishes and more to come,

Lauren

Fall Break is just around the corner

September would prove to be an extremely busy month. I am not for sure where October 1st came from as the hype of starting classes as well as new student orientation felt like it was just a few weeks ago. We all know the saying, time flies when you are having fun. I would argue the ending of that could be or studying while you are at Nebraska Wesleyan.

Planning ahead for my semester I felt confident that it would not be extremely demanding as far as having to study and I would have time for a little rest and relaxation. Boy was I wrong! I have never given so many presentations or studied so hard for exams over the course of my Wesleyan career but I know it is worth it. Remember during your time at Wesleyan it is important to study hard and get good grades but they are not always everything! Make sure you reward yourself by taking breaks to enjoy all of the fun things Wesleyan has to offer.

Speaking of fun things, I just recently got back from the American Cancer Society Relay For Life summit in Dallas, Texas. I was kind of nervous going down there because hurricane Ike had just hit Houston but we were safe and able to have a delightful time!

We took away with us new innovative ideas to promote Relay For Life on our college campuses and it also provided us great networking opportunities. It is my hope that Relay For Life will be a big success this year. I will keep you updated about the fun things that will be going on to raise money to help find a cure for cancer!

I hope that things in October will slow down a little bit but it is not looking too promising. I am looking forward to fall break as I am sure many students on campus are. It sure is time for a break. I am heading to Colorado with my roommate Mary for fall break so I will tell you all about it in my next blog. Enjoy the fall weather and the beauty of campus as the leaves turn!

Have a great break!

Lauren
